Preparing for exams can feel like a lot, but with a few smart techniques, you can make your revision more focused and productive. Here are some of the best ways to get more from your study time.

Use active recall

Don’t just read your notes. Test yourself by closing the book and trying to remember the key points or explain them out loud. This helps build stronger memory and understanding.

Spaced repetition

Revise topics over time instead of cramming. Go back over the same topic the next day, then a few days later, and again the following week. Apps like Quizlet or Anki can help with this.

Try the Pomodoro method

Set a timer for 25 minutes of study followed by a 5 minute break. After four sessions, take a longer break. This helps you stay focused without feeling overloaded.

Blurting

Write down everything you remember about a topic before revising it. This shows you what you already know and what you need to spend more time on.

Explain it to someone else

Talking through a topic with someone else can highlight what you do and don’t understand. It’s a good way to check your progress.

Use past papers

Get familiar with the types of questions you’ll be asked and what examiners are looking for. Practise using past papers and check the mark schemes.

Condense your notes

Summarise your notes into short bullet points. This makes the content easier to remember and helps you engage with it in a more active way.

Make a revision timetable

Plan your time. Break your revision into small daily tasks and mix up different subjects. You can adjust your timetable as you go.
